King Henry VIII had two legacy's that have endured over 500 years.
The first one was to create the Church of England. The second one was that he made the Royal Navy.
Henry created The Church of England in order to divorce his first wife (out of six), Catherine of Aragon. Originally his older brother was going to marry Catherine to maintain an alliance between Spain and England, but Henrys older brother died. So Henry married Catherine. Catherine of Aragon's parents were Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain who sent Columbus on his voyage. Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon were Roman Catholic and the Church forbade divorce. After 23 years, there was no male heir. Henry began to look for a new wife. Anne Boleyn who was Catherine's chambermaid caught Henry's eye. But in order to marry Anne, Henry needed to divorce Catherine. Henry changed Anne's position from chambermaid to his mistress. The Pope refused the divorce because he was Catherine of Aragons relative. Henry decided that he would declare himself head of the Catholic Church. So he created the Church of England. This is one way Henry VIII has a lasting legacy. You may or may not have known that King Henry VIII was called 'father of the Royal Navy. Because Henry VIII built ships for England. When he became king there were five ships for royals. Until his death he had built up to 50 ships. Henry VIII also created a naval dock and a navy board (where they created machinery). As you can see Henry VIII had a lasting legacy that is still influential to Londoners now.
This is a picture of Henry VIII's first wife Catherine of Aragon. An interesting fact about her is that she was married to Henry's brother first (cool right?)
