Wife #1: Catherine of Aragon was the first wife. She was daughter to Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain (who sent Columbus on his voyage to discover America). Catherine was married to Charles, Henry's older brother. However, a few weeks after they were married, Charles died.
In order to maintain the alliance to Spain, Henry who was crowned at age 17, married Catherine.
Catherine and Henry had a daughter, Mary, who was named after Henry's sister. Henry wanted a male heir to the throne so he tried again, and Catherine had a miscarriage. She kept having miscarriages or babies who did not survive infancy. This was frustrating to Henry as only males were allowed to succeed their father. Women did not count in those days.
Soon Anne Boylen, who was Catherine’s chambermaid, caught Henry’s eye. He moved her status up from chambermaid to his mistress.
Henry asked the Pope for a divorce from Catherine and he refused because the Pope was Catherine’s nephew. Soon Henry got impatient and he created the Church of England which is still in operation today.
Wife # 2: Henry soon married Anne and the royal fortune tellers said she would have a boy. It had turned out that they were wrong, and Catherine had a girl (the future queen Elizabeth I).
Mary, Henry’s 1st daughter was demoted and was now referred to as the bastard child (she was very young when this happened). Henry found out from his officer that Anne was committing adultery and he tried her for treason, which carries a sentence of death. Anne’s head was lopped off in the Tower Green in the Tower of London. Henry was trying to be nice and got a French swordsman to do this as those swords were more precise.
Wife #3: Henry’s next wife was Jane Seymour, who was the love of his life. A fun fact is that she was the only wife to be buried with Henry. Jane Seymour had Henry's only legitimate son Edward. Henry had four other sons all named Henry, however, two died and two were not legitimate. A week after Jane gave birth, she died.
Wife #4: Henry was now looking for a new wife. He was deceived and decided to marry Anne of Cleaves based on an inaccurate portrait. However, when he met her in person she was ugly, but very nice. He divorced her and turned her into his sister. Anne of Cleaves was able to help Henry’s daughters build a relationship.
Wife #5: Henry was now 49 years old, and married Catherine Howard. She was 19 years old giving them a 30 years age difference. Catherine cheated on Henry with Thomas Culpepper and the same fate that happened to Anne Boleyn happened to her. OFF WITH HER HEAD!
Wife #6: Henry’s last wife was Catherine Parr, who was in love with another man when Henry seduced her. She reluctantly married Henry, they had a good life until Henry died of an infection that he grappled with for most of his life. After Henry died, she married her true love.Top of Form
